Two weeks ago we bought a new Sony 32" flat screen TV. Last week we managed to hook up my husband's PC to the TV to watch Netflix via his computer (We live in South America and the Netflix here is different from the US. He has a VPN in order to get the same Netflix as in the States.). Today we bought a cable to connect my MacBook (2,1) to the TV. We bought the "mini display" cable, which we tried out on a MacBook in the Apple store here before purchasing it. Upon arriving at home I noticed that the hole to plug in the cable on my computer (which is 5 years old) was a bit different. We we able to plug it in anyway and then hooked it up to the TV. Nothing happened. We tried several things but never could get a picture on the TV. I think that the mini-display cable we bought was not the correct one and that there was no power getting from the computer to the TV, but that is just my opinion. So we unplugged the computer. We then tried to turn on the TV normally (not connected to anything) and it won't turn on. It's like it's dead. I'm am completely sick. Did we just kill our TV trying to connect it to my MacBook? It turned on while connected but we cannot get it to turn on now. Is there any way to find out what went on or is going on with the TV? I don't know anyone here who knows about these things. Can anyone help? I realize this question is not completely MacBook oriented, but if you can help, I would sure appreciate it.

I don't think it is possible to damage your television in this way. Unplugging the TV and pluggin it back in should reset its electronics. The TV owners manual should have instructions, and you should be able to contact Sony for additional support. It has a warranty. Use it if you need to.

You should never stick the wrong connector in any computer port. I would take the MacBook to the store and get the correct adapter before trying this again.

Thank you for your help. Yes, I do need the correct adapter. I thought I was buying the correct one because I took it to the Apple store to see if it fit their MacBook. It did. I guess the MacBook has evolved some since I bought mine five years ago. I'm glad to know it wasn't my computer that messed up the TV. We have tried to reboot, but nothing we've done works. It is dead as a doornail. The TV is still under warranty but the problem for us comes from the fact that we live in Ecuador and the TV was bought in Panama. Sony does do business here and we will take it in this morning. Hopefully they can fix it. Thanks again for responding to this.
