I have one of the older (non Intel) iMac G5s. I am using OS 10.4.6 and am set on automatic update. When I looked at the site you provided I saw several firmware updates. I was taught a long time ago don't fix what is not broke. So, I am very tentative on any fine tuning. Advice or suggestions are most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Ed

I would not do any updates if everything is running fine. If it ain't broke, don't break it. :D

That's an excellent advise. For example, I always keep my iMac updated, but along the way, a few weeks ago, something got screwed. The computer is working fine, but regardless of what application, Apple or not, I can't update any that ends on ".dmg." I either get a "codec overrun," or a verification error. Not even FireFox, nor OnyX can be updated :) manually, nor with their respective software updates.

I can leave the computer the way it is, but it keeps on nagging at me. I have already backed music, photos, and miscellanious files and data, so the next step is to erase the internal hard drive, and reinstall the OS plus other applications. I wonder if I should wait for Leopard to be released and do a clean install on a clean hard drive, or just reinstall Mac OS X and update it to 10.4.9?

Any ideas?

Try mounting a .dmg file from within a different account.

I can try that to see what happens, since I am running out of options.

Thanks.

Also, try repairing disk permissions and restarting.

Nothing has worked so far, perhaps because the OS was corrupted during previous "Software Update" sessions. I have tried manual download/install. sessions (as well as Software Updates) for over 5 weeks now. Since I also have a mirror image of the internal HD on and external LaCie drive, this one must be corrupted, too. I started my iMac from the external drive to see if I could install the updates, and the results were the same: either "codec overrun, or verification failure."

Have you tried an "Archive and Install" from an installation disk? Then apply the latest Combo updater, etc.

Hmmm...! No; I haven't, but I will, and then come back here and report.

Thanks.

No. It didn't work. I will probably have to completely erase the drive in the near future. I will have the options of installing Leopard, or Mac OS X on a clean drive, and then update manually instead of using Software Update. The last time I had the same problem was about six months ago, and somebody in here mentioned that I should continue downloading and installing the updates a few days later, and that worked. This time I have tried on and off for at least five weeks.

Thanks.

Ray
