Sailfish, I appreciated your detailed instructions on how to clone your drive. I followed them to the letter (Erase with zero, repaired permissions, selected "make bootable"), but I don't think my external drive is booting my system. I selected it in system preferences as the one to boot from, but when I reboot my G5, all I hear is the internal drive. I am using an AcomData FW external drive and CCC. I'm currently on OS 10.3.9. Do you have any suggestions?

Sandylp,

This may sound a little silly, but have you gone into System Preferences > Startup Disk and selected the external to startup from? Does it show the OS X folder on the external in the window with your internal and Network Startup?

I don't like severe interruptions to my ability to use and operate my G5 system or any other of my Apple computers. I also like to upgrade when Apple releases a major revision such as Tiger.

My approach is to buy a new HD or use an existing one that's on my shelf for installing a new system such as Tiger.

For me on my dual G5 2.5 my approach will be to remove my 2nd HD that contains backup and working files after I've moved needed files to an external FW device. I'll then install a new 300gig SATA HD and install Tiger on this. I'll slowly populate this HD with my 3rd party apps one at a time as time permits and test them out. In meantime I'll continue my primary work using the Panther boot drive - a 74gig Raptor HD. Soooo, over time I'll start using Tiger more and more and suspect I'll reach a point when I'll start using Tiger as my primary system.

Eventually when I'm satisfied with Tiger I'll abandon Panther on my Panther boot drive and move Tiger from the 300gig HD to my high-speed Raptor HD.

Obviously I'll keep an eye open on forum to get a heads up on problems others are experiencing and learn from that.

I find that I must undergo the pain/agony of upgrading personally as no two people go about upgrades the exact same way. I just like to do it with caution and will not do it cold turkey as some sporty people do.

Yes, Cory, I did that, but it would not boot from the clone. When I selected the External and clicked restart, I'd get the little question mark for a moment when the computer was booting and it would then boot from the internal HD. I checked the Acomdata site for a firmware update, as was suggested on the CCC forum, but there was none. After trying everything, I returned the Acomdata external drive and ordered a LaCie 250 fw drive. I'll try again when the new drive arrives. I want to make a clone before installing Tiger.

If I want to copy my entire HD to my external LaCie disc, do I just drag and drop?

Using Carbon Copy Cloner would be best, as it copies the files that normally wouldn't be copied using the Finder.

kidatari is correct...if you just drag-n-drop, it will not copy many "invisible/hidden" System files, thus the copy will not be bootable.

Here is more information on using CCC and OnyX to clone your drive, provided by our resident expert Sailfish:

Clone your boot drive, before it's too late!

Out of curiosity, did you try holding the option key while booting?

Yes, Antarius, I held the option key, but the external drive wasn't shown to be an option. After trying everything I've read, I finally surmised that this drive was not bootable. I zeroed it out again and returned it and ordered a LaCie 250 external. It should be here next Tuesday. I'll try that, and if all goes well, I'll install Tiger.

Hi,
Reading through this, I realize that it looks like it was posted maybe a year back or so(2005-6) and Leopard has been out for a bit. So I am hoping some bugs have been worked out.

I just got a refurb 2.3 duo, a little newer than my old model. I put my old HD in the second slot, and I am running 10.4. It has a lot more memory than the old one did, and I heard that this software takes a bunch. I was pondering that since I haven't put alot of stuff on it yet, if this is the good time to upgrade to leopard? I see here that I need to go to my software companies and ask if they have glitches happening with leopard. It's good to know this as I was wondering about my last big upgrade and what happened.

so, I will keep looking around on this board but any advice is helpful.

Hi Janet,

if you want to let us know the apps you are wanting to load, I'm sure the brains trust here can let you know if they have them working in Leo yet.
Sounds a bit easier than trawling the net. ;)
